Washington, DC - The international law firm Jones Day announced today the addition of two of counsel to the Firm's Intellectual Property Practice in the Silicon Valley and Beijing offices. Steven X. Cui joins Jones Day's Beijing Office, and Daniel H. Mao will split his time between Jones Day's Silicon Valley and Shanghai offices. These hires follow the recent addition of three partners and one of counsel to Jones Day's IP practice in Hong Kong in August.
"The addition of Messrs. Cui and Mao bolsters our growing China IP team, and their backgrounds further strengthen our full-service IP offerings," said Robert C. Kahrl, co-head of Jones Day's IP practice. "As the spotlight continues to shine on China IP issues, their arrival increases our ability to serve clients' global IP strategy needs across continents."
Mr. Cui joins Jones Day after spending more than seven years as an in-house counsel at Genentech in South San Francisco, where he was the lead IP counsel for the company's most promising drug products. He managed patent filing and prosecution, licensing and collaboration, patent terms and portfolios, among other duties. He will focus on patent procurement, technology licensing and collaboration, and global IP strategy at Jones Day. Mr. Cui earned his Ph.D. in molecular neurobiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995 and his law degree from Stanford University in 1998.
Mr. Mao joins Jones Day from Townsend and Townsend and Crew, where his legal practice focused on intellectual property matters for companies in the electronics field. He specializes in the area of strategic patent counseling, portfolio management, and licensing negotiation. He also participates in patent litigation and interference and performs patent analyses for risk assessments and funding transactions. Mr. Mao has advised many companies on global IP issues and has worked with a variety of China-based companies to implement their U.S. patent strategies. He also has assisted various companies in protecting their intellectual property rights in China. Mr. Mao earned his Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University in 1998 and his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2002.
In August, Jones Day announced the hires of Peggy Cheung, Anita Leung, and Chiang Ling Li, partners, and Helen Tang, of counsel, to the Firm's Intellectual Property Practice in Hong Kong. The additions of Mr. Cui and Mr. Mao continue to solidify Jones Day's Greater China IP practice - which numbers more than 20 IP lawyers - as one of the largest of any full-service international law firm.
